NAMI WALKS: A Huge Success-Despite the Rain!

MoCo, Once Again, In the Spotlight

Saturday, May 8th, 2010.  Eighty staff, clients, family members, and members of the Board of Directors, all representing Team MoCo, converged on the indoor track of the Gorham Campus of USM and commenced to walkin’! Along with CSI, MoCo took the award for most pledged walkers.  Motivational Services had 113 pledged to walk and CSI had 112.  The weather may have kept some away, but not our team! The weather report predicted heavy rain for that day, so the decision was made to walk indoors.  The result was organized chaos.  The event sponsors, NAMI, managed to get all the teams pictures taken, t-shirts handed out, vendor tables set up, and not once was there a person without a smile.

The festivities included:  face painting for children and grown-ups alike; balloon twisting; stilt walkers; gigantic puppets; and refreshments galore!  What made the event extra-special?  The participation of actress, Glenn Close.  Though slight in stature, her impact was BIG!  She spoke of how the stigma of mental illness has impacted her family, and of the importance of these events to help end that stigma.  During the walk, she made herself available to all that wished to get an autograph or just speak with her and her family.  She was mobbed most of the time!

The indoor track at USM proved good walking ground, and the crowd took to it with gusto… Dogs and children were everywhere! To some it was a race, for others a leisurely, walk and talk time, with friends.  Still others, took breaks along the sidelines, and cheered the walkers on.   After almost an hour and a half, people stopped walking and gravitated toward the lunch provided.   Many remained to enjoy the festivities long after the walk ended.

Natalie (one of our Board of Directors) and Max Cohen.

A multitude of thanks to all those who walked, pledged and supported the MoCo Team.  An extra special thank you to Jeff Thompson and Mary Ann Johnson, our co-captains, and Cindy Wurpel, for help in getting everyone signed up online.

Our very own paparazzi: Mary Weiss, John Painter and Nicole Michaud, supplied us with photos of the day!

Employee Higher Education

The Maine Development Foundation recognizes outstanding Maine Employers at Waterville event

On April 14, 2010, the Maine Development Foundation and its Maine Employers’ Initiative recognized 22 greater Kennebec Valley Maine employers for their efforts in supporting employee higher education.  The awards were presented at the meeting of the Kennebec Valley Human Resources Association at the Waterville Holiday Inn.  The celebrated employers have committed to support their employees' educational goals through a variety of actions ranging from celebrating employee completion of a degree or certification program, to creating or enhancing a formal tuition payment assistance program.

“There is no more critical investment to be made to ensure Maine’s future prosperity than the investment in higher education, with the goal of supporting every Maine worker to achieve his or her highest potential,” said Laurie Lachance, president and CEO of Maine Development Foundation.  “The Maine Development Foundation is very grateful for the leadership demonstrated by these employers – and all of our 85 committed employers in Maine.  We appreciate their commitment and support to their employees’ education.”

Barbara Woodlee, President of Kennebec Valley Community College and honoree, said, "The Initiative is a wonderful partner for employers in Maine seeking to encourage their employees to achieve their full potential through lifelong learning. As educators, we understand the obstacles workers face as they pursue college degrees and certificates that advance their skills, and we recognize the value of organizations like the Maine Employers' Initiative in overcoming those obstacles."
